What is the most important lesson I’ve
learned from the novel?
Divergent, the first
book from a trilogy by Veronica Roth is the best novel I’ve ever read in my
life. Being true to myself is what I have learned from the book overall. It is
vital for me to be honest with myself and other people around me by just being
the real me despite the flaw I have cause no one is perfect. It makes me feel a
lot comfortable in my social life since I can say and do what my heart tells me
as long as it does not give negative impacts on me and others.
The theme of being true
to oneself especially in making choices is clearly shown in the book. The story
sets in the future where people are divided into factions; Abnegation the
selfless ones, Candor who speaks the truth, Amity which is filled with
happiness, Erudite the highly educated people and Dauntless, the brave souls.
When Beatrice, the main protagonist turned sixteen she had to take an aptitude
test to determine which faction she suited to be in. On the day of choosing the
faction, she was free to choose any of the factions. ‘Faction before blood’ was
what the people in the book hold on to. Since Beatrice got three results from
the test; Abnegation where she was raised by her parents, Erudite the faction
her brother had chosen and Dauntless, she herself was confused. She should
choose Abnegation so that she did not hurt her parents’ feelings but her heart
told her the opposite. Within seconds she had to make the biggest choice. What
will she do and live in for the rest of her lives? Being true to herself,
without taking other things into consideration, she chose Dauntless.
The choice she made at
first seemed absurd for she knew nothing about fighting and battling. But as
time goes on, she learned and improved for that what she looked forward to when
she woke up in the morning. So basically, I learned that I should be true and
fair to myself because I am the one who will lead this life. I am experiencing
what Beatrice has experienced in the book. I have options to choose from. What
career should I pursue in? Which university? And I always thought, am I in the
right path?
