Movie Review Week 1: Into the Woods

Interesting Words

·         It was agony for the couple not knowing their abducted children’s whereabouts.

Would I watch this movie again, and why?

Frankly, I don’t think I will watch this movie again because it is very simple and suited people who loved children stories. It’s pretty much tells the story about a married couple who worked in a bakery. A witch from next door approached them one day and revealed the curse the man had which caused them to be childless. So, in order to get a child he and his wife had to get some stuffs for the witch before the blue moon emerged. They seized a golden sandal from Cinderella, bought a white cow from a kid named Jack who gave the cow for some magic beans, cut Rapunzel’s hair and got a red hood from a mysterious girl who took their breads.

Eventually the characters’ wishes came true. Nonetheless, they realized that every wish has consequences. Jack, who climbed the beanstalk to the giants’ home and took a harp, had killed one of the giants. It caused rage to the wife of the giant who later on attack the village, and the woods. Some of them were lost. Some were out of their mind, as if there were spells in the woods hypnotizing them. The prince cheated on Cinderella and show interest towards the baker’s wife. The baker, the red riding hood, Jack and Cinderella soon reunited to save them from the giant. Unfortunately, the baker’s wife was killed during the attack of the giant.

I find the movie somewhat lame since I knew most of the plot which came from fairy tales. There are so many singing parts that I felt like I was watching a musical theater instead of a movie in the cinema. The story line is predictable and lack of suspense. The narration as the background is not interesting. It’s like reading a fairy tale book. Some singing parts should be cut out to focuses on the dialogue and movie content. It’s fine to watch it as it does entertain. I could say that if someone is so bored, he or she can consider watching the film.

3.       Geneticist –scientist who studied genetics

What makes me keen to finish the book?

The last words in the book are jaw dropping for me. I keep turning back the last two pages. I reread the paragraphs, and thought to myself. ‘Is it the end already?’ Two words I could say to describe Peter James’ work- mind blowing. This is the most unique book I have ever read in my life.
Perfect People tells heart breaking, thrilling story of a married couple; Naomi Klaesson and John Klaesson who lose their son Halley due to a rare genetic disease. Taunt by the misery life of Halley’s struggling; they decided to design their new baby. They pay millions dollar to Dr Dettore who claimed that he could help them to remove the disease gene they were carrying. He is a geneticist who used to cause buzz in the media for his crazy ideas but that does not matter to the Klaesson couple. Despite the golden chance to opt for many super characteristics for their baby such as his vision, immune system, learning abilities and physical traits, they do not pick much of those. They only hope for a healthy normal baby, not some super human being. Things got tough for them when Naomi gave birth to twins, a boy named Luke and a girl named Phoebe, both were more advanced than the Klaesson couple could ever imagine. And that they are hunted by crazy science antis who is claimed to murder Dr Dettore.

It is a great writing for me since there were a mixed of science, psychology and family love which makes me eager to know the ending. Designing babies could be possible in another twenty years for technology is evolving. I am so curious regarding Phoebe and Luke’s development as they were mentally smarter and more matured than their age. Imagine a three year old kid could perform surgery on a guinea pig! What fascinates me is the fact that they can actually explained scientific details about thunderstorm formation to their mother yet they could not understand why their mother who has a headache could not take her pills by herself since her legs are not injured. They are cold to mostly everyone and feared the kids at the playschool. To distant themselves from others, they speak in special code in which the English word is reversed and the fourth letter is dropped out.

The climax where the twins vanish with strangers and then there is some fanatic guy from an anti science group, The Disciple of Third Millennium is found dead outside their house is totally unpredictable to me. What surprises me more is the last part of the novel. I cried when I was reading the paragraphs. How the twins eventually turned out to be after eight years separating with their parents is absolutely unbelievable! I am touched by Naomi and John who still accept their children albeit they had refused to stay with them years ago and left. And really, they are not normal at all. I remembered by parents and thinking about how much parents actually love their children just by reading the book, tears rolled down my cheeks.  In a nutshell, we humans should accept ourselves just the way we are. Everyone has flaws, yes but if everyone is perfect, how do you think the world will turned out to be?

What is the most important lesson I’ve learned from the novel?

Divergent, the first book from a trilogy by Veronica Roth is the best novel I’ve ever read in my life. Being true to myself is what I have learned from the book overall. It is vital for me to be honest with myself and other people around me by just being the real me despite the flaw I have cause no one is perfect. It makes me feel a lot comfortable in my social life since I can say and do what my heart tells me as long as it does not give negative impacts on me and others.

The theme of being true to oneself especially in making choices is clearly shown in the book. The story sets in the future where people are divided into factions; Abnegation the selfless ones, Candor who speaks the truth, Amity which is filled with happiness, Erudite the highly educated people and Dauntless, the brave souls. When Beatrice, the main protagonist turned sixteen she had to take an aptitude test to determine which faction she suited to be in. On the day of choosing the faction, she was free to choose any of the factions. ‘Faction before blood’ was what the people in the book hold on to. Since Beatrice got three results from the test; Abnegation where she was raised by her parents, Erudite the faction her brother had chosen and Dauntless, she herself was confused. She should choose Abnegation so that she did not hurt her parents’ feelings but her heart told her the opposite. Within seconds she had to make the biggest choice. What will she do and live in for the rest of her lives? Being true to herself, without taking other things into consideration, she chose Dauntless.

The choice she made at first seemed absurd for she knew nothing about fighting and battling. But as time goes on, she learned and improved for that what she looked forward to when she woke up in the morning. So basically, I learned that I should be true and fair to myself because I am the one who will lead this life. I am experiencing what Beatrice has experienced in the book. I have options to choose from. What career should I pursue in? Which university? And I always thought, am I in the right path?
